Xbox News: Microsoft Confirm Development on ‘Scalebound’ has Ceased

Various gaming sites have spent the last two hours (9/1/17) reporting that the Xbox One exclusive, Scalebound, has now had its development ceased by developer Platinum games. This has not been confirmed by Microsoft in the following, albeit short statement, that this is the case:

“After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for “Scalebound.” We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including “Halo Wars 2,” “Crackdown 3,” “State of Decay 2,” “Sea of Thieves” and other great experiences. This statement feels extremely dismissive of the impact this cancellation has on the 2017 line of of brand new IP exclusives for the Xbox One, especially when Sony announced a whole bunch of titles during their PlayStation Experience which ended 2016 on a high for them.

Scalebound was at shown again at Xbox’s E3 2016 briefing after it was first announced at E3 2014. Delays and silence from Platinum Games and Microsoft during these years has led to much speculation about its status, though a showcase at Gamescom 2016 lead many to believe that the release was coming soon, but a delay from the previous Holiday 2016 release to a vague 2017 date soon put doubt in once again.

Sony are already building up to a huge 2017 release in Horizon Zero Dawn with a new Uncharted spin off title, The Last of Us Part 2 and other exclusives all lined up, Xbox’s 2017 is looking very thin on blockbuster exclusives outside their long running franchises.

*UPDATE* – Wednesday 11/1/17

Platinum Games have finally issued a statement on their official website, 48 hours after Microsoft had confirmed that development on Scalebound had been cancelled. President and CEO of Platinum Games, Kenichi Sato said the following:

“We’ew sorry to say that on January 9, 2017 Microsoft Studios announced the cancellatin of Scalebound. We are very disappointed things ended up this way, especially since we know many of our fans were looking forward to this game as much as we were.

Going forward, we will strive to continue delivering high-quiality games to you, starting with NieR:Automata in March, and including products like GRANBLUE FANTASY Project Re:Link and LOST ORDER in the future.
